Royal Academy of Dance
The Vocational Grades
The Vocational Grades are highly technical and demanding Royal Academy of Dance syllabi designed to prepare students for careers (performance and/or instruction) in classical dance. A six day per week program of study is recommended at these levels although reduced programs are possible.
In the Vocational Grades, Character Dance and Free Movement are incorporated throughout the syllabi rather than examined as separate elements.
All Vocational Grades syllabi have a mandatory pointe work component for female students.
The Vocational Grades syllabi are:
Intermediate Foundation Prerequisite: none.
Intermediate Prerequisite: none
Successful examination in the Intermediate syllabus allows for Royal Academy of Dance Membership which is a prerequisite for pursuing Royal Academy of Dance teaching certification.
Advanced Foundation Prerequisite: Successful examination in the Intermediate syllabus.
Advanced I Prerequisite: Successful examination in the Intermediate syllabus or Foundation for Advanced.
Advanced II Prerequisite: Successful examination in the Advanced I syllabus.
Solo Seal Prerequisite: Successful examination in the Advanced II syllabus examination with a result of Distinction.
UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS:
Discovering Repertoire
Levels 2, 3 and 4
FEMALE:
• capped sleeve, scooped neck or camisole leotard in black or burgundy
• optional asymmetrical knee-length chiffon skirt to match leotard
• for Variations at all levels, a romantic or classical tutu in white or black, with
or without decorative ribbons, may be worn
• tights to match skin tone
• soft ballet shoes in satin, canvas or leather with matching elastic/ribbons may be worn for all units
• pointe shoes or soft pointe shoes may be worn for Units: Variation 1 and Variation 2
• all shoes to match skin tone
• short sleeved white, navy or black leotard, or well fitted white t-shirt
• grey, navy or black stirrup tights
MALE:
• short white socks (with grey or navy tights) or black socks (with black tights)
• white or black ballet shoes in canvas or leather with matching elastic and socks
Intermediate Foundation & Intermediate
• capped sleeve, scooped neck or sleeveless leotard in black, navy blue, royal blue or purple
• half tutu may be worn for Variation 1, which should match or tone with leotard
• skirt may be worn for Variation 2, which should match or tone with leotard

• optional waistband (2 cm elastic, with colour to match leotard)
• tights to match skin tone
• soft pointe shoes (for Intermediate Foundation only, soft ballet shoes may be worn)**
• pointe shoes should be worn for the pointe work section. All shoes should match skin tone
• pointe and soft pointe shoes should be fastened with matching ribbons
• elastics are optional, but if chosen must match/tone with shoes/tights
MALE:
• white leotard or well fitted short sleeved t-shirt worn tucked into tights
• grey, navy or black stirrup tights
• white socks worn over the tights
• white or black canvas or leather soft ballet
shoes with white elastic
• split sole shoes are permitted
Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 & Advanced 2
FEMALE:
• white, black or navy leotard
MALE:
• grey, navy or black stirrup tights
• short white socks (with grey or navy tights) or black socks (with black tights)
• white or black canvas or leather soft ballet shoes with elastic. (If black shoes are worn, then socks should be black)
• split sole shoes are permitted
These programs have Closed performance course options that prepare the students for performing in our annual spring stage production. The course usually also compete.
