Lauren Phillips, age 16, trains 6 days a week at Caulfield School of Dance, and like all other members of the Performance Training Company, takes a full Ballet program, and also trains in Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Modern and Contemporary Dance, Acrobatics, Singing, and Acting. In 2014-2015 in addition to performing in 6 group dance pieces and various acting scenes, Lauren also prepared 4 solo dance pieces, and numerous vocal selections for singing competition and performances. Lauren earns great grades in high school, and still finds time to do things like sing backup for Barry Manilow at Rogers arena with Show Stoppers, and be the Bloch Dance Canada Rep for clothing and shoes.
And in her spare time, Lauren put together a video audition that got her a spot in a summer intensive at the Broadway Artist Alliance in New York.
Lauren has just returned from her weeklong summer intensive. With other top musical theatre students age 21 and under, she had classes with Broadway actors including Laura Osnes, Lindsay Mendez, Randy Graff, Tyrick Wiltez Jones, Jeff Shade, and Bob Cline. Sutton Foster also came to speak with the group!
Lauren and the other participants concluded the intensive by performing for agents and managers in the final showcase in an off-Broadway theatre. Lauren said: “I had an amazing week training in New York at the Broadway Artists Alliance. I loved learning from professionals and working with kids who have the same hopes and dreams as me!”
Lauren was awarded the Caulfield School of Dance top scholarship award for the 2013-2014 year and certainly continued to be a role model in citizenship, dedication, effort, and achievement throughout the 2014-2015 year in spite of personal adversity. After receiving a mark of Distinction – the highest awarded by the R.A.D. – for her Advanced Vocational Ballet and Pointe examination when she was 14, Lauren was preparing to do her Advanced II examination. Lauren was also preparing for the first time to compete provincially in Ballet. But in January, her feet just gave out and pointe shoes would not be an option until she recovered. It was devastating to have to shelf her ballet solos and R.A.D. exam, but Lauren went to work right away on her rehabilitation under the care of Dr. Lindsay Rite. And Lauren was again selected to compete at the 2015 Provincials in Voice.
Lauren was Provincial Voice Champion for Musical Theatre Under 14 Years (when age 13) and Under 18 Years (when age 14). She then took a year off of vocal competition. This year she did us proud again: Lauren was awarded 1 of only 2 Honourable Mentions given – the other went to her fellow Dr. Gina Oh voice student, Madison Simms. Though both are only 16 year old, they were competing in the 18 and under Musical Theatre category. And Lauren was awarded the runner-up title in the Provincial Vocal Variety category.
Lauren is now back in great shape as a dancer and definitely on her way to developing herself into a formidable triple threat.
