We could not have been more proud of all six of our pieces that competed in the No Borders Group Dance Challenge at Surrey Arts Centre on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
It was thrilling to have our Professional Training Division Age 15 Group Lyrical piece “Can’t Take My Mind Off of You” choreographed by Hailley Caulfield Postle, awarded 3rd in the Grand Championships of the No Borders competition! Congratulations to the Praise T.E.A.M. hip hop piece awarded 1st, and the Peggy Peat’s tap group who were awarded 2nd, and ALL the dancers who participated in the all day No Borders event.
We had three groups in the Intermediate age category (13 to 15 years) “Ballet” competition: “I Might Be Wrong” Group Contemporary, Age 15, choreographed by Hailley Caulfield Postle, “Point(e) Made”, Group Ballet 15 years, with choreography by Jocelyn Wozencroft; and “Under the Moonlight” Group Contemporary Ballet 15 years, with choreography by Cori Caulfield. At No Borders, the “Ballet” competition includes Classical Ballet, Demi-Character Ballet, Interpretive Ballet, Group Classical Variation, Contemporary Ballet, Contemporary Dance, and Modern Dance.
Winning the “Ballet” competition, the Professional Training Division Contemporary number “I Might Be Wrong” was selected as the representative number from the Intermediate age level to advance to the Grand Championships! With only one rehearsal, the cast had to compete without Sadie, who was injured. Special thanks to Natalia for stepping in and to Lincoln and Alejandra for being such great understudies all year.
In the Intermediate age category of the “Jazz” competition, which includes Jazz, Lyrical Jazz, Hip Hop, and All Street Styles of dance, our Group Lyrical Age 15, “Can’t Take My Mind Off of You” choreographed by Hailley Caulfield Postle, was selected as the representative number to advance to the Grand Championships, where it placed 3rd Overall!
In the Intermediate age category of the “Stage” competition, which includes Song and Dance/Musical Theatre, Tap, Stage No Voice, Lip Synch, Acro Dance, and Acro, we had: Group Song and Dance Age 14, “Bring it On” with vocal instruction and choreography by Jocelyn Gauthier; and Group Tap Age 15, “Zoot Suit Riot” choreographed by Hailley Caulfield Postle. These numbers both had to compete last minute without Sadie too.
The No Borders Group Challenge is only open to numbers who have received a 1st placement at a regional completion and have a minimum average cast age of 10 years and up. Some 1st pacing numbers are invited by the Chilliwack and Surrey festivals, and some the School selects to enter. We thank Surrey Festival of Dance for hosting this wonderful event.
Congratulations to all the “No Borders” competitors!
