Dance House
Dance House presents the return of Compagnie Marie Chouinard (Cori Caulfield danced with this company in the late 1990’s) to Vancouver with a two-part art inspired dance production February 27 and 28, 2015.
Veteran Montreal choreographer Marie Chouinard, Canada’s reigning queen of contemporary dance, returns with an ambitious two-part interpretation of the work of two famous French artists: Erik Satie and Henri Michaux. Take peek at the trailer here.
Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton Street)
Tickets start at only $35!

In Gymnopédies, famed French composer Erik Satie’s haunting works for piano from the late 1800’s become a contemporary kinetic meditation on human intimacy and desire. This sensuous piece brings Satie to life in a series of duets that will amuse, titillate, and surprise.

With Henri Michaux: Mouvements, Chouinard translates the visual into the physical in a percussive and vital dance that interprets a 1951 book of illustrations by poet and artist Henri Michaux. The translation is direct. Chouinard’s dancers splash and contort all over the stage, capturing the energy of the movement-filled, calligraphic and almost figurative India ink drawings for which Michaux was best known. Both Satie and Michaux rejected the more ornate expectations of the artistic movements they emerged from, focusing instead on the pared-down essence of their respective forms. With this latest offering, Compagnie Marie Chouinard has done the same thing, creating work that, “stripped to its bare essence,” is moving and contemporary — full of humour, passion, and eros.
