Character Dance and Free Movement
Character Dance and Free Movement are components of all Royal Academy of Dance syllabi from Grades I to VIII.
Character Dance is European folk dance adapted into a theatre art. With its emphasis on rhythm and style, Character Dance is a vital part of classical ballet training. All female students in Royal Academy of Dance programs from Grades I to VIII will require Character shoes from a dance supplier and Character skirt rented from Caulfield School of Dance. Male students will require hard soled shoes . Please see your Guidebook for more detailed attire information.
Free Movement is the Academy’s term for its integration of modern dance and improvisational elements into its comprehensive ballet syllabi. With an emphasis on musicality and expression, Free Movement is an important part of a complete ballet education. Female students in Royal Academy of Dance programs from Grades VI to VIII only, will require a long chiffon skirt and matching scarf for examinations.
