Storyline and Comments

Storyline: “Collages” is a short drama about a young girl who tries to connect with her depressed mother through art. Eloise, 10, is losing her childhood to the reality of divorce and a broken family. A series of vignettes show Eloise making art in an attempt to understand her mother’s volatile behavior and the absence of her father. Eloise’s attempts to connect with her mother are futile, so she tries another way to maintain a sliver of control in the chaos. Through a disorienting tone and elegant suspense, we experience this world through Eloise’s young eyes to explore the power of a child’s non-verbal expression in a time of trauma.
Submission Instructions: Please email Stefanie Bartlett at bartlett.stefanie@gmail.com for consideration.

Characters for Collages

Eloise (Lead)       Gender: Female     Age: 9 – 11
Eloise is growing up in a small town in the US. She is full of joy and wonder, and observes the world around her constantly, taking it in with her big eyes. In particular, she watches her mother, Violet, who seems to be going through an emotional breakdown. She transcribes what she sees into her collage projects. Although she is shy and quiet, she takes control in an unexpected moment and makes a decision that could dramatically alter her family’s dynamics.

Violet (Lead)       Gender: Female     Age: 35 – 40
As a single mother taking care of two young girls and trying to make a living off of her art, Violet is cracking under pressure. She finds it difficult to keep her emotions at bay in front of her girls. She loves her daughters more than anything else in the world but struggles to show it through her anger and frustration. Although she is loosing control of her life, she shares a couple sweet moments with Eloise as she tries to reconnect with her daughter.

Lucy (Supporting)       Gender: Female     Age: 6 – 8
Lucy looks up to her older sister, Eloise. She mimics her movements and is constantly learning from her. In this stressful situation, she turns to her sister for support and love. She is bubbly and outgoing, and not afraid to speak her mind.
