Madison Simms receiving instruction in the 2015 Senior Arts Club Musical Theatre Intensive.
Madison Simms, age 16, just completed the two week Senior Arts Club Summer Musical Theatre Intensive (MTI). This elite program selects a small group of participants aged 14 to 19 by audition for three weeks of concentrated professional training in singing, dancing, and acting.
The Intensive is led by renown Vancouver teacher, actor, singer, director, and producer (Patrick Street Productions) Peter Jorgensen whom you may have seen in Arts Club shows such as Forever Plaid, Dames at Sea, Dirty Blonde, Beauty and the Beast, She Loves Me, etc..
Madison says, “I had an incredible experience at the Arts Club Summer Musical Theatre Intensive. I’m finding it hard to describe my feelings after this amazing experience, I mean I went from uneasiness to absolute love! They pulled me apart, but that was what made it so great! The Intensive focuses on the process of acting and developing connections between the performer and the material in many different ways. I am surprised at how much more connection I have in my body and mind, and with this new knowledge, I’m looking forward to the next year of performing I have ahead. I had the opportunity to work with some amazing teachers and made some lifelong friends as well. I would most definitely recommend the Arts Club Summer Musical Theatre Intensive to my peers at Caulfield.”
For over 9 years Madison has trained at Caulfield School of Dance in musical theatre, acting, many forms of dance, and in group and private voice with Caulfield School of Dance Voice Section Head, Dr. Gina Oh. Madison has been both a very successful dance and solo voice competitor. In the last 2 years, she has competed in 5 competitions for Voice and been asked 5 times to represent those competitions at Provincials; this year, Madison was selected by both competitions she entered, Pacific West Performing Arts and Coquitlam District Music festivals, to represent them for Voice at Provincials. At Provincials, Madison received 1 of only 2 Honourable Mentions awarded; the other went to her fellow Dr. Gina Oh voice student, Lauren Phillips, both of whom were competing at age 16 in the 18 and under category.
Parallel to a performing career, Madison wants to pursue teaching and choreography professionally. This spring, Madison stood her Royal Academy of Dance Intermediate exam and now holds internationally recognized accreditation of proficiency in classical ballet including pointe work, and the credentials to pursue teacher training with the R.A.D.. From September 2014 to June 2015 Madison was an excellent assistant teacher to Dr. Gina Oh, and also choreographed the performance pieces for two of Dr. Oh’s Musical Theatre groups: Bet Yer Purdy Neck and I Got Rhythm.
At the Caulfield School of Dance “Body of Work” shows in June 2015, Madison Simms, was awarded a scholarship from Cori Caulfield in memory of Azra Collier Young, and a special scholarship from Dr. Gina Oh of 4 hours of recording studio time at Paranoid Studios. Madison was also awarded a scholarship to the Gotta Sing Gotta Dance program for this summer.
The Caulfield School of Dance community is very proud of Madison for all her achievements but even more for her courage in continuing to take on challenges with hard work, determination, openness, and humility. We look forward to continuing to support Madison in her development as an unstoppable triple threat and teacher.
