CSD instructor Jared Khalifa is bringing his On Camera workshop to Caulfield School of Dance on Thursday, September 26, from 1:30 – 4pm during the Half Day program schedule.

This workshop introduces pre-professional dancers to dancing in the film and television industry in a positive and inspiring way, providing an opportunity to be directed in dancing for the camera, and seeing themselves perform on screen. For an additional fee, each dancer will also have access to HD quality edited footage of themselves dancing solo.

Solo Video Digital Download Fee
Approx. 1 minute of edited high definition solo video by digital download: $25 including GST ($23.81 + tax)

The On Camera workshop provides a selection of choreography with directed improvisation. Students are professionally filmed and have the opportunity to purchase the video of themselves for personal archive and/or demo reel and audition submission footage. The choreography will be in a Contemporary fusion style (elements of modern/contemporary and ballet) that is currently in high demand in the commercial industry. The work will also investigate character, with an eye to what current projects are casting and shooting in the Lower Mainland e.g. if Disney is filming a Christmas movie, and is casting for dancers to play elves, the choreography would be directed towards playing that character and for an audition and executing it on set.

Working in the film and television industry, Jared noticed that dancers who come from a competition/studio background understand how to perform for a live audience, but in front of a camera, nerves impede their portrayals and performance quality is lost. This type of workshop is something new to the studio dance community. It will help young dancers feel calm and confident in auditions, shooting, and performance opportunities in film and television. All dancers should know how to dance on film. The dance industry is evolving rapidly with changes in expectations, teaching styles, social media, and variety of work available. Dancers are expected to learn choreography more quickly than ever, understand how to play various types of characters, know how to perform for a camera, and in many cases, audition/promote themselves using video.

Jared Khalifa is a multidisciplinary performing artist, athlete, and teacher. After touring the North America with Cirque Du Soleil, Jared returned to Vancouver, to work in the film and television industry as a dancer. Select credits include: “Sabrina” (Netflix), “Motherland” (Freeform), “A Cinderella Christmas” (Warner Bros), and “Descendants 3” (Disney). His teaching has taken him across Canada and to Europe, working with conventions, companies, and clients including “So You Think You Can Dance”, “World of Dance”, Cirque du Soleil, and Tyler Ayres Dance and Aerial.
